KUALA TERENGGANU: The state could soon break the national record of having the highest bid for a car registration plate.

State Road Transport Department director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said it had received two verbal offers of RM200,000 for the number plate TAY 1.

"I have received calls from two businessmen who are willing to pay RM200,000 for the number plate," he said after opening a seminar on tyre safety at the RTD headquarters here yesterday.

One of them was from Kuala Lumpur while the other was from the state, he said.

If the department received a higher bid, it would break the current national record for a vehicle registration plate, which is also held by Terengganu.

That record stands at RM200,090, which was paid for the number plate TAN 1.

The last high bid for a number plate in Terengganu was RM165,000 for TAX1.

"Since tenders for TAX1 had closed on Nov 3, the person can register the number any time now, provided the amount is paid in full."
