WASHINGTON, Feb 25 – Toyota Motor Corp President Akio Toyoda apologised to US lawmakers probing the automaker’s safety record but ended the day in tears, worried his message went lost in translation.

Toyoda, peppered with questions about the recall debacle that has rocked Toyota’s reputation, told lawmakers he was “deeply sorry” for accidents and injuries involving Toyota cars. He said the company had lost its way during a period of fast growth but vowed to steer it back to the values that made it a watchword for quality.

Cheered by Toyota plant workers and dealers at an event organised by the automaker on Wednesday evening, Toyoda broke into tears under a giant display bearing the name of the company that his legendary grandfather founded.

“I believe that Toyota has always worked for the benefit of the United States,” Toyoda said. “I tried to convey that message from the heart, but whether it was broadly understood or not, I don’t know.”

He also offered a sober assessment of the challenges still ahead: “We at Toyota are at a crossroad. We need to rethink everything about our operation.”

Toyoda’s appearance in Washington marked a dramatic peak in a safety crisis that broke a month ago with a series of recalls over unintended acceleration and braking problems that now include more than 8.5 million vehicles globally.

The costs of the recall are set to grow with an agreement with New York state to speed customer repairs and provide alternative transportation, a pact likely to expand to other states.

Toyoda’s efforts to reassure US officials and consumers were undercut by a confrontation over a 2009 memo in which Toyota boasts of saving $100 million by persuading safety regulators to accept a relatively cheap recall of floor mats implicated in the unintended acceleration.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who preceded Toyoda before the committee, simply labelled recalled Toyota vehicles as “not safe.”

LaHood also repeated a criticism he had leveled before, saying Toyota had become “a little safety deaf” until US regulators took the extraordinary step of dispatching a team to the automaker’s headquarters at the end of 2009.

ELECTRONICS PROBED

Dressed in a gray, pinstriped suit, Toyoda said he, more than anyone, wanted Toyota cars to be safe. “My name is on every car,” Toyoda said in English before using a translator to answer questions.

But Toyoda rejected the possibility that some of the acceleration problems are in the electronics rather than the recalled sticky accelerator mechanisms and floor mats that can trap the accelerator pedal.

“I’m absolutely confident that there is no problem with the electronic throttle system,” Toyoda told the committee.

Nevertheless, Toyota has hired outside consultancy Exponent Inc to research the electronic throttle, and lawmakers returned frequently to consumer complaints and some safety experts’ concerns about the throttles.

Ohio Democrat Marcy Kaptur was one of the few lawmakers to prick Toyoda’s grim-faced composure.

Waving a book celebrating Toyota’s commitment to quality, she said she was not satisfied with his testimony. “I don’t think it reflected adequate remorse for those who died.”

The exchange appeared to move Toyoda. “I came here from Japan to speak to the people of the world,” he responded. “I’m trying to speak from my heart, but I understand the criticism that my explanation does not go far enough.”

Chris Gidez, director of risk management and crisis communications at Hill & Knowlton, said Toyoda gets points for coming from Japan to testify and judgments will not be made in just one hearing. “This is going to be a marathon for Toyota.”

FIVE DEATHS

The unintended acceleration problems have been linked to five US deaths, with 29 other fatality reports being examined by US authorities.

Representative Paul Kanjorski, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, warned Toyoda that his company would have to pay for the deaths and injuries as US lawsuits mount.

“You will be called upon to pay compensation,” Kanjorski said.

Mark Saylor, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, was killed last August, along with three members of his family, when the Toyota Lexus sedan he was driving sped out of control. The accident sparked the recent recalls.

Oversight panel chairman Edolphus Towns and other lawmakers blasted Toyota for the July 2009 memo boasting of limiting a 2007 recall of floor mats that were later implicated in that fatal accident.

The memo obtained by congressional investigators appears to be a briefing for Toyota’s North American President Yoshi Inaba, and prepared by Toyota’s Washington D.C. staff.

Rep. John Mica, a Florida Republican, called it an embarrassing day for regulators and for Toyota.

“I’m embarrassed for you, sir,” Mica told Inaba, who was testifying with Toyoda. “I’m embarrassed for the thousands of Americans who work at 10 plants across the United States.”

Inaba said he could not recall discussing the memo at a meeting held about two weeks after he took over Toyota’s US operations. He later added that the memo did not present Toyota’s guiding principles or beliefs.

In a further embarrassment, both Toyoda and Inaba were forced to admit that they were unaware of key pieces of information that might have helped the automaker respond faster to safety concerns.

Inaba, who was brought back out of retirement by Toyoda to head US operations in June, said he had not been aware that Toyota’s European operations had identified the same problem with sticky accelerator pedals a year before the US recall.

Toyoda said had not been briefed in any detail on a key meeting between Toyota safety executives and US regulators in December 2009 where officials have said they hammered home the message that the automaker was moving too slowly.

Gerry Connolly, a Virginia Democrat, said Toyota appeared to suffer from “extraordinary compartmentalisation,” a criticism echoed by other lawmakers in two days of hearings.

CRIMINAL PROBE

Toyota now faces a criminal investigation and a securities probe in the United States as well as unresolved questions about hundreds of incidents of unintended acceleration reported by consumers.

The FBI raided the Detroit operations of three Japanese suppliers of electronic components to the auto industry on Wednesday, but a person familiar with the investigation said the raids were unrelated to the Toyota recalls.

In his statement to the committee, Toyoda extended his condolences to the Saylor family and said he was “deeply sorry” that the company had allowed quality standards to slip during a period of fast growth over the past decade.

Toyota has promised internal reforms, including a new committee on safety chaired by Toyoda himself.

The crisis has shattered confidence in the world’s largest automaker, whose vehicles have long been known for their reliability and high resale value.

At a Feb 3 congressional hearing, LaHood had advised owners of recalled Toyotas to stop driving their cars. He later told reporters he had misspoken.

LaHood reiterated on Wednesday that Toyota owners should take their vehicles to dealers to make sure they are repaired.

He also repeated promises that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would thoroughly investigate the possibility of electronic problems causing unintended acceleration.

The stoic composure of Toyoda and Inaba contrasted with LaHood who was at times irritated and combative.

When Californian Democrat Judy Chu asked whether NHTSA had ceased to be a watchdog and instead become a lapdog of the auto industry, LaHood bristled.

“On my watch, we’ve been a lapdog for nobody,” he boomed.

Toyoda, who took just a few questions from reporters, only appeared to relax at the evening rally organised for Toyota dealers and workers.

One woman who works in a Toyota plant in Alabama, building engines, asked what she could do to help the company in its crisis.

“Let’s make a better car,” Toyoda said, breaking into English. – Reuters

Nissan, Suzuki, Daihatsu to recall cars in Japan

TOKYO, Feb 25 — Three Japanese carmakers announced recalls today, mostly in their home market and not on the same scale as recent moves by the likes of industry leader Toyota which heightened scrutiny of car safety.

Nissan Motor Co, Japan’s third-biggest carmaker, said it would recall 76,415 cars across 10 models in Japan and 2,281 cars overseas due to a possible defect that may cause engine failure.

Separately, Suzuki Motor, Japan’s No. 4 carmaker, said it would recall 432,366 units of two minicar models in Japan after two reported incidents of fire due to a possible defect in air conditioners.

Elsewhere, Daihatsu Motor said it would recall 60,774 units of four minicar models in Japan due to wiring problems that could trigger airbags to inflate accidentally.

Minivehicles, with an engine size of 660cc, are only sold in Japan.

The recalls follow the recall of more than 8 million cars by Toyota Motor Corp.

Nissan, 44 percent owned by French carmaker Renault SA, said it found a connecting terminal between circuit cords in the engine had in some cases been damaged in the testing process before the cars were sold.

The damaged component could cause the engine to fail during driving, spokesman Toshitake Inoshita said.

There have been no reported accidents and the number of cars affected overseas is small as all the engines involved were produced at plants in Japan, Inoshita said. — Reuters

Toyota Motor Corporation President and CEO Akio Toyoda (R) shakes hand with employees at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, Feb 25, 2010. – Reuters pic

WASHINGTON, Feb 26 – Toyota Motor Corp President Akio Toyoda had an “cordial and open” meeting on Thursday with US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood before thanking workers in Kentucky for supporting him during his appearance before Congress.

“Your presence there gave me strength,” Toyoda said to workers, some of whom were among hundreds of employees, dealers and others who traveled to the nation’s capital to bolster Toyota and him personally during hearings into recalls and other safety questions engulfing the company founded by his grandfather.

“It inspired me,” Toyoda said at the Georgetown facility before expressing thanks “from the bottom of my heart.”

Clad in a red sweater with a Toyota logo, Toyoda talked and shook hands with workers on the assembly line.

Earlier, Toyoda met in Washington for 30 minutes with LaHood, the Obama administration’s top transportation official who testified along with the executive on Wednesday before the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“They had a cordial and open discussion,” Toyota said in a statement.

“He (Toyoda) reiterated his focus on putting customers first and making sure that going forward the company will do all it can to further improve communications and work more closely with the department,” Toyota said.

A LaHood aide characterised the first face-to-face meeting as productive.

The two spoke earlier in the month when LaHood, who has called Toyota Motor “a little safety deaf,” phoned Toyoda to convey his concerns.

Toyoda told lawmakers on Wednesday that he took personal responsibility for the crisis.

LaHood has said he would hold Toyoda to his pledge to take US safety concerns seriously.

Toyota has recalled more than 6 million cars and trucks in the US in recent months for loose floor mats that can jam the accelerator and for gas pedals that will not spring back as designed.

Regulators believe floor mats are linked to at least five US crash deaths, with 29 other consumer reports under review alleging fatalities associated with unintended acceleration.

US regulators and Toyota also are looking into whether there are problems with electronic throttles. Toyota has said those systems are sound, and NHTSA found no problems in previous reviews.

But Congress has questioned whether regulators probed hard enough on unintended acceleration over the years and whether NHTSA has the expertise to handle investigations into the sophisticated electronic systems equipped in today’s vehicles.

Separately on Thursday, the Senate Commerce Committee released its witness list for next Tuesday’s hearing focusing on Toyota recalls with special emphasis on the role of regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Toyota North America President Yoshimi Inaba and LaHood will highlight testimony. Senators also will hear from Toyota’s executive vice president for quality control, Shinichi Sasaki, and David Strickland, NHTSA administrator.

Inaba also testified alongside Toyoda at the House Oversight and Government Reform hearing. – Reuters

TOKYO (AP): Japan is looking to Toyota president Akio Toyoda's appearance before U.S. lawmakers next week to help burnish an image marred by a flood of recalls - and to prevent grievances over the issue from fanning broader political tensions.

With his company facing the worst crisis in its 70-year history, Toyoda will appear before the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee next Wednesday. By issuing an invitation, the committee had essentially forced Toyoda, who earlier had said he did not plan to attend, into testifying.

Commentaries Saturday and statements by officials here since Toyoda announced he would accept the request to testify reflect the unease over possible wider damage from Toyota Motor Corp.'s troubles.

"I hope Toyota will soon regain the trust of their customers around the world," Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada told reporters Friday.

"Although this is a matter of one individual company, we wish to back them up as much as we can as it could become a national issue," Okada said.

Japan's industry and transport ministers also publicly applauded the decision, saying that Toyoda should take the opportunity to help reassure and mollify customers angered over the recalls of about 8.5 million vehicles over sticking gas pedals, accelerators jamming in floor mats and momentarily unresponsive brakes.

"We should not make this issue a political matter between the Japanese and U.S. governments," said Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Masayuki Naoshima, himself a former Toyota group employee.

While so far the recalls remain a safety and business issue, Japanese officials are keen to ensure it stays that way at a time when ties with Washington already are strained by a dispute over plans to move a U.S. Marine base on the southern island of Okinawa.

Many in Japan have voiced suspicions that the uproar over the recalls might be driven by political motives, given the U.S. government's stake in General Motors Co. and its costly bailouts for the domestic motor industry.

But opinion favoring Toyoda's choice to publicly answer questions over the company's handling of the problems leading to the recalls seems for now to be outweighing dismissals of the crisis as evidence of "Japan bashing."

"Will Toyota Motor Corp. be able to quell the rising tide of sentiment against the carmaker over its massive recalls?

Undoubtedly, the world's biggest automaker has reached a moment of truth in grappling with its current adversity," the mass-circulation newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun said in a Saturday editorial.

"The planned public hearing is drawing a good deal of attention from around the world, and we hope Toyota will with full sincerity explain its stance on the problem. This in turn would help restore the public trust in its car business as early as possible," it said, contending that Toyoda could have forestalled much of the criticism by showing his willingness to testify from the start.

In both Japan and in the United States, Toyota has been chastised for a tepid response to the recalls, and Toyoda was accused of being largely invisible as the problems escalated, until giving three news conferences in recent weeks.

A Toyota spokeswoman, Mieko Iwasaki, refused to comment on a report by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper saying Toyoda would leave for the U.S. on Saturday, saying the company would not disclose details of his schedule.

The company has pledged full cooperation with investigations by the U.S. National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration and Congress and promised upgrades to help prevent future problems.

In Japan, where Toyota has recalled 223,000 Prius hybrids for braking problems, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is considering beefing up its recall system to require manufacturers to file reports on problems more quickly, the Yomiuri said in a report Saturday.

Calls to the ministry rang unanswered Saturday, and officials were not available to comment on the report, which did not name any sources.

Hyundai Santa Fe
Expected in 2010
Estimated price: 23-26 Lakh
SUV. One term which not many will associate the Korean giant - Hyundai with. It is that segment of the auto industry which is tantamount with big, brawny, imposing looking machines to which the word ‘car’ will not really be able to do justice.

Hyundai was one of the first to sight the growing potential of the SUV segment and introduced Terracan. Result? It failed to capture the imagination of the buyer. Reason? Price and brand image. Also that it was not really all that great a car! Hyundai thought about it, phased it out, and drove in with another SUV - Tucson. A good car this, which was aimed at beating Honda’s CR-V at its game. Result? The same as Terracan’s.

Hyundai Santa Fe InteriorYou see, Honda has more snob value than Hyundai and at 12-13 lakhs, people become increasingly conscious about their image. Why else do you think that SUVs like Honda CR-V and Ford Endeavour have been selling more than Tucson? Your guess is as good as ours.

Terracan - the Pajero-based SUV is history, and so will be the Tucson when Santa Fe enters India to try its luck at establishing Hyundai with the image of a maker of capable and desirable SUVs.

Hyundai has no dearth of engineering capabilities and is one of the auto-makers which has been upping its ante all this while. The Santa Fe is a testimony to this statement. Alluring, in-yer-face, dynamic, aggressive are adjectives that will fail to describe the curves and flowing desing elements of this SUV.

Hyundai Santa Fe RearIt is big and that imposing grille with an “I-am-bored” look will only add to its character. The gradually rising waistline makes the rear look a little odd though. The flared wheel-arches will house massive wheels. Hyundai plans to import the Santa Fe in India and will offer a delicious 2.2-litre, 148bhp diesel motor which might be tuned to suit Indian fuel quality.

This SUV is going to be as bang up-to-date as the intelligence reports of the US of A! Expect some tension at Honda and Ford camps when Santa Fe comes in during the last quarter of 2008.
Specs (Speculated)

JAKARTA, Feb 15 — Locally produced Toyota Avanza minivan topped the list automobile sales in Indonesia last year, with more than 100,000 units sold, Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) says.

The total automobile sales in Indonesia reached 480,000 vehicles last year, down from more than 600,000 in 2008 and 430,000 in 2007.

TAM marketing director Joko Trisanyoto revealed yesterday that the company’s popular Toyota Kijang Inova brand came in second, with 36,386 units sold, followed by Daihatsu Xenia, with 41,487.

Honda Jazz came forth with 16,353, followed by Nissan Livina with 14,144, Toyota Rush 13,081, and Suzuki APV with 12,692.

Joko said that all the winning models were assembled locally. Locally assembled vehicles dominated the Indonesia’s vehicle market, accounting for 87.1 per cent of sales last year, up from 85.7 per cent in 2008 and 84.3 per cent in 2007.

“This shows that domestic consumers like the MPV and SUV models produced in Indonesia. I’m confident that if sales of a model are high enough, the principal will use Indonesia as a production base for this model,” he said. — Jakarta Post

DETROIT, Feb 20 — The largest US auto insurer alerted regulators earlier than first believed about a worrying trend of accidents involving Toyota Motor Corp vehicles, while the Obama administration’s top transportation official said yesterday he would not relax pressure on the carmaker.

Both developments came as Toyota’s president, Akio Toyoda, readied to fly to Washington in an extraordinary appearance to answer questions from lawmakers next Wednesday about the safety crisis that has engulfed the company founded by his grandfather.

State Farm, whose records have been sought by two congressional committees investigating recalls and complaints related to unintended acceleration in Toyota cars and trucks, revised its report today of when it notified the government about certain Toyota claims activity.

The insurer said earlier this month it had contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in late 2007. However, prompted by the public interest in Toyota, the insurer reviewed its records again and has now found that it contacted safety regulators initially in 2004, State Farm spokesman Phil Supple said in an emailed statement.

The information has been sought by House of Representatives committees probing questions around recent recalls of millions of Toyota vehicles related to loose floor mats that can jam accelerators and gas pedals that do not spring back as designed.

The government believes five crash deaths are linked to unintended acceleration and are investigating consumer complaints alleging up to 29 other fatalities since 2000 could be linked as well. Regulators have not linked any deaths to the “sticky pedal” problem.

The first of three congressional hearings takes place on Tuesday but much of the focus for the moment has settled on the second hearing, the next day, when company president Toyoda is scheduled to testify.

Toyoda said he intends to provide a “sincere explanation” to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee of problems that led to the string of recalls since late last year.

Toyoda’s decision on Thursday to accept a congressional request to testify ended days of uncertainty over how the company would ultimately respond to calls that he come to the United States to address safety questions.

The media-shy Toyoda, who took the top job last June, originally said he had no intention of appearing before Congress himself, drawing criticism from industry analysts and Japanese politicians.

Even if Toyoda’s appearance before the Oversight panel goes well, the carmaker still has problems to overcome from engineering challenges to lawsuits to restoring brand image.

Toyota’s stock has fallen 22 per cent since Jan 21, erasing more than US$30 billion (RM102 billion) in market value.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said yesterday that he is “very pleased” he will be able to meet Toyoda next week, and that the government has no intention of turning down the heat on the automaker.

“We at DOT (the Department of Transportation) and we at our safety agency (the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) will continue to work 24/7 and we will not sleep until every Toyota is safe for every American who owns one,” LaHood told a news conference in Los Angeles.

Congress is examining several issues in a string of Toyota recalls that date to September. A priority of lawmakers is how Toyota and NHTSA handled complaints and other matters related to unintended acceleration, whether the recalls were done swiftly enough, and whether they were sufficient.

The Oversight committee will also hear from LaHood and a witness representing the family of Mark Saylor, a California highway patrol officer killed along with his wife, daughter and brother-in-law in an August crash that triggered renewed government scrutiny of unintended acceleration.

Toyoda has said the company is investigating the causes of the unintended acceleration and braking that have led to a recall of about 8.5 million cars worldwide.

Analysts and public relations experts stressed the need for clear and honest testimony from Toyoda. By appearing to dodge questions, Toyoda could further stain Toyota’s reputation.

“Rather than getting bogged down with the details, I think (Toyoda) should use this as a chance to communicate Toyota’s corporate philosophy,” said Yasuhiro Matsumoto, a senior analyst at Shinsei Securities in Tokyo.

“What’s missing from Toyota right now is the big picture.”

Executives giving such testimony should also expect difficult questions, experts said.

“The important thing is that they actually answer all questions and don’t dodge or run away,” said Shoichi Yoshikawa, chief executive of public relations firm Hill & Knowlton Japan.

Toyoda, 53, will have to craft and deliver a message that resonates with millions of consumers, investors, employees and lawmakers around the world.

He is likely to undergo intense preparation. Toyota may hire lawyers to drill him with mock questions, one consultant said.

A company source said it had not yet been decided whether Toyoda would speak in Japanese or English, but the company has already contacted some translation companies.

In addition to the recalls over unintended acceleration, a separate recall is under way to fix software controlling the brakes on Toyota’s iconic Prius hybrid. Regulators have also begun a preliminary investigation into complaints about steering problems in late model Corollas.

Kia Motors' Ray plug-in hybrid concept made its debut at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show earlier in the week, and the design inventively showcases a futuristic four-seat compact saloon based on the Kia Forte platform.

Designed with lightweight and recycled materials, as well as hexagonal solar cells embedded in the glass roof panel to power extra lighting or climate control systems, the Ray boasts a range of up to 1,200km, powered by an all-aluminum 153bhp 1.4l Gasoline Direct Injection engine mated to a permanently-engaged, fixed ratio CVT drivetrain, used in combination with a 78kw electric motor and lithium-ion battery system.

The vehicle is equipped with an engine-power saving alternator management system and a toggle gear-shift indicator to encourage economical driving, and custom-designed low-rolling resistance tyres featuring a hexagon pattern in narrow 20-inch (195/50R20) construction also aid efficiency.

Design-wise, the vehicle incorporates a low-slung silhouette and clean, flush surfaces minimising unnecessary edges to give it a flowing profile, and a pronounced rear shoulder ending in a slightly higher deck helps reduce drag further.

Instead of side-view mirrors and door handles, motion-detector cameras are mounted flush with the body for safe lane changing procedures and opening of doors. The front door opening features a forward cutout design for the feet allowing ease of entry, and the height and shape of the purposeful rear-hinged coach doors improves entry and exit.

Features include nano-laminate films and cool-glazing materials to dramatically reduce solar heat and keep the interior cool; when the vehicle is parked in the sun, the solar cells provide a trickle charge that helps operate a cooling fan to reduce interior temperatures.

Inside, there's plent of tech on show, starting with a lightweight touch screen instrument layout, which incorporates the push-button start and gear shift toggle. The centre console features the all-new Kia UVO, powered by Microsoft, providing voice- and touch-activated controls for simple management of music files and hands-free mobile phone operation.

Adding to the list of green technology, there's the all-new GreenEdge system by Infinity Audio - the loudspeakers reduce power consumption and dissipation through lower self heating temperatures coupled with increased acoustic performance, and the amp used also reduces the idle power consumption by 50% of current Infinity speakers and employs a lower dissipation design for significant savings in overall weight.

Speaking of weight, a hexagon/honeycomb shape can be found throughout the cabin, used as a repeated design element while tying the interior theme together. Used also in the door inserts and seats, this lightweight and breathable mesh serves to reduce overall kerb weight as well as being a unique design element.

Porsche will be lifting the covers on its 911 GT3 R Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The vehicle, which is of course developed especially for racing, features an innovative hybrid drive system, with an electrical front axle drive with two electric motors, each developing 60kW, supplementing the familiar 480bhp 4.0l flat-six pot at the rear.

And, instead of the usual batteries of a conventional hybrid-powered road car, this 911 features an electric flywheel power generator – mounted inside the cockpit beside the driver – that delivers energy to the electric motors on the front axle.

The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor - with its rotor capable of spinning at speeds of up to 40,000rpm - and stores energy mechanically as rotation, or kinetic, energy. The flywheel generator is charged-up whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators.

1. and 5. Power electronics. 2. Portal shaft with two electric motors. 3. High voltage cable. 4. Electrical flywheel battery.

The driver is able to call upon this extra energy from the charged flywheel generator at his command for competitive advantage, such as when accelerating out of a bend or overtaking. The flywheel generator is slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode, and is able to supply up to 120kW to the two electric motors; this additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately six to eight seconds.

After its debut in Geneva, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races around the Nürburgring, with the highlight of the test programme being the 24 Hours race around the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit on May 15-16. The focus, of course, is for the vehicle to be a ‘racing laboratory’ and provide invaluable knowledge and insight on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going Porsche sports cars.

Proton will be unveiling its A-segment concept hybrid car at the 80th International Motor Show in Geneva on Mar 2. The four-seater, five-door hatch will be launched by Proton's advisor, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, at the show.

The vehicle is a creative collaboration with Italdesign Giugiaro and is essentially the first configuration of what will turn out to be family of low environmental impact compact cars due from Italdesign in the future.

The 3550mm long concept features a front-mounted endothermic engine for recharging the lithium ion batteries with a fully electric drive-train. The specially designed chassis also features a raised floorpan which accommodates the hybrid system’s batteries at the rear.

The concept leverages on maximising interior space, while maintaining the overall dimensions of a compact car. The high position of the four independently-adjustable and sliding seats, allows passengers to fully enjoy the spacious interior. Thanks to the combination of these two technical specifications the car is easier to enter, as the seats’ H-points (or the position of an occupant’s hip) are at the same height as in an SUV.
