According to Insideline Bentley will introduce a new Azure convertible that will be based on the rather odd-looking Mulsanne. The top-less Azure is expected to be launched next summer and is likely to be a 2-door with a fabric roof.

When we say the word ‘based’ we also mean that the Azure will carry the Mulsanne’s front end as well and I am not sure if thats the right thing to do. Motivation is expected to come from a 6.75 liter V8 with twin turbos that is capable of producing 505hp and a massive 1020Nm of torque.

The first ever Bentley Azure was launched back in 1995 and the four seater convertible was based on the Continental. Pictured above is the 2009 Bentley Azure T.

BMW is now the world’s most valuable auto brand after the company overtook Toyota in an annual ranking of the world’s top brands called BrandZ Top 100 which is run by market research company Millward Brown. The survey indicated that BMW has a brand value of US$21.8 billion and sits in 25th spot in the overall ranking.

“It is likely that Toyota’s brand has suffered further in recent months, but it is a strong brand and is trying hard to overcome the damage through a major communications campaign,” said director Peter Walshe. “All of our evidence shows that strong brands are much more likely to recover from a crisis.”

According to the survey although BMW is on top its brand value declined by 9% compared to last year. Toyota had it worse with a 27% decline. Third place went to Honda while Mercedes-Benz is in fourth after suffering from an 11% drop. Porsche is in fifth after its brand’s value fell by 31%.

The brands that made up the top three of the list include, you’ve guessed it Google followed by IBM and Apple. Google’s brand value is worth US$114 billion.

Volvo Car Malaysia has just launched the refreshed C30 for the local market. There are two models to choose from including the C30 2.0 and the top-of-the-line C30 T5 R-Design. The most noticeable difference is the restyled dynamic-looking front end that is also evident on other new Volvo’s such as the S60.

At the rear Volvo has replaced the black plastic panels with body colour in either the same or in contrasting colour. There are also two new wheel designs while the T5 R-Design variant gets dual chrome exhaust tailpipes. Volvo has also added a new Orange Flame Metallic body colour.

Improvements in the interior is mostly made up by a new ultra-thin centre stack that is finished in a new Oyster Burst Deco inspired by the surface texture of the classic Swedish Hagstrom guitar. There is also a new accessory styling kit that comprises of a fog lamp decor, a front skit-plate, side scuff plates with engraved C30 logo as well as a rear skid plate with an aluminum look.

The base 2.0 model is able to crank out 145hp and 185Nm of torque while the T5 R-Design features a 5-cylinder 2.5 liter engine that makes 230hp and a heathy 320Nm of torque. The former comes fitted with a 6-speed Powershift dual clutch transmission while the latter uses a 5-speed Geartronic.

True to Volvo’s nature the C30 also comes with a list of safety features. There is the Blind Spot Information system that alerts the driver if there is a vehicle in the Volvo’s blind spot, Dynamics Stablity Traction Control which is pretty much an electronic stability program, Active Dual-Xenon Bending lights that change the direction of the lights depending on steering angle and Adaptive Brake Lights which will flash all three brake lights (up to five flashes per second) if it detects a “panic braking” situation.

Pricing wise the C30 2.0 can be yours for RM215,000 (OTR without insurance) while the more powerful C30 T5 R-Design carries an RM259,000 (OTR without insurance) price tag.

Ford has unveiled its Start Concept vehicle at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show. Powered by a 1.0l, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, the design of the vehicle was inspired by the world's fast-growing mega cities and the unique needs and mindset of their inhabitants. With heavy traffic, limited parking and fuel efficiency being key concerns among urban drivers, the car provides a vision into a future sporty, small-car package that meets a multitude of primary driving objectives, particularly among first-time buyers.

Design elements include the use of lightweight material and the incorporation of efficient aerodynamics, and the car also utilises smart phone technology to perform a multitude of in-car functions.

The company says that besides the design exploration aspects into the feasibility of a future small car, the vehicle is also effectively a preview of the smallest engine yet in the growing EcoBoost engine family; Ford says the technology will come into production in the near future, offering low CO2 emissions but with the power and drivability comparable to the company's larger petrol inline-four cylinder powerplants.

Daimler unveiled its new ultra-luxury Maybach sedan yesterday, as automakers began a flurry of new vehicle launches at the Beijing auto show in a scramble for China's fast-growing market amid slack sales elsewhere.

The show, in a country with almost no private cars 15 years ago, has risen to the top ranks of global auto industry events as China's explosive sales growth drove this market past the United States in 2009 to become the world's biggest.

Foreign automakers are pushing to expand sales in China while young but ambitious local brands such as Volvo buyer Geely want to raise their profile. The auto show opens today to the press and next Tues to the general public.

The new VW Phaeton, which debuts at the show.

Daimler debuted the blue and silver Maybach at a lavish event amid the 19th century mansions of Beijing's old embassy district, with entertainment by pop singer Leona Lewis.

"Nowhere is the potential and the possibility of the future more apparent than in China today," said Ulrich Walker, chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia.

The new Maybach, which features optional Swarovski crystal decorations on the seats, perfume atomisers and wireless Internet routers, is one of 14 new vehicles to be shown by global automakers in a reflection of China's new importance.

Sales elsewhere are so weak that China accounts for most or all the global profits for such major producers as General Motors, Volkswagen and Daimler, said John Zeng, an auto industry analyst for IHS Global Insight. "The real profit is coming from China. China is very important for global automakers both for profits and sales volume," he said.

China's auto market shrugged off the global crisis and sales soared by an eye-popping 45% last year to 13.6mil vehicles, well ahead of the 10.5mil units sold in the US. Sales have been boosted by China's economic rebound, which saw growth accelerate to 11.9% in the first quarter of this year. Analysts expect more double-digit sales growth this year, though they say it should slow from 2009's breakneck pace as Beijing winds down its stimulus and cools bank lending to head off an upsurge in inflation.

Ford's Start Concept.

Foreign brands are more aggressive than ever this year in Beijing, where organisers say a total of 990 vehicles are to be displayed, from motorcycles to minivans to fire trucks to futuristic concept cars.

GM is premiering its all-electric Volt MPV5 concept car and a Chinese-made minivan and a compact sedan. Ford's latest Focus sedan gets an Asian debut and the company is unveiling a new concept car. Daimler's new vehicles include an E-Class sedan designed for China with a bigger backseat to attract business people who have drivers. Volkswagen also is debuting its own ultra-luxury Phaeton sedan.

Toyota says it will display 50 vehicles including its latest gas-electric Prius hybrid and an electric concept car. Toyota's image has taken a beating abroad over safety complaints but sales in China, where only a few thousand vehicles were recalled, have suffered little impact.

Chinese automakers also are promoting themselves more aggressively than ever. They plan to unveil a total of 75 new sedans, SUVs, experimental "green" cars and other vehicles, according to the show's organizers.

BYD's e6

Geely Holding Group, a 13-year-old brand barely known abroad before it agreed in March to buy Sweden's Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Co. for US$1.8bil, is showing 55 of its own models, including 11 new vehicles. The company says it hopes to boost sales this year by 22% over 2009 to 400,000 units.

Chery Automobile, China's biggest domestic auto brand, plans to show 29 vehicles including four alternative fuel models. It is bringing in 200 sales agents from foreign markets to see its latest models, said company spokesman Jin Yibo. Chery exports to some 70 developing countries in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Chery's sales target for this year is 700,000 vehicles, with exports doubling to 100,000.

A key theme this year is clean transportation, including cars and buses driven by fuel cells, natural gas and other alternative sources.

Beijing sees alternative vehicles as the industry's future and is pushing its products to develop the technology, though industry analysts say gasoline will dominate the Chinese market for the foreseeable future.

BYD, with backing from American investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, which owns a 9.9% stake, says it plans to show its all-electric e6, which it says it plans to sell this year in North America. BYD says it plans to double sales this year to 800,000 vehicles and expand to Europe in 2011. - AP

Volkswagen has debuted its Milano Taxi concept at the Hanover Trade Show. The vehicle, finished in the traditional green and black of Milan taxis, draws inspiration from the classic Samba Bus from the 1950s mixed with current design language, and showcases the possibility of a mass-market, emission-free electric taxi.

The 1,500kg vehicle is powered by a motor offering a peak of 115bhp, fed through a 45kW/h lithium-ion battery integrated into the underside of the vehicle; the unit offers faster charging times, with 80% of its total capacity being reached in just over an hour. Performance-wise, the vehicle manages a top speed of 120kmh and has a 300km range.

At 3.73m long, 1.66m wide and 1.60m tall, it's shorter and narrower than the Fox, but can carry two passengers in comfort with a glass panel roof creating a bright and spacious environment, with 944mm of headroom available, and the rear 60:40 split glass doors helping further in this regard.

Luggage space at the front of the car is ample, while entry to the vehicle is through the integration of a large door that both swivels and slides forward, making for easier ingress and egress.

Once aboard, the passengers can access an LCD display mounted on the reverse of the driver's seat to see an overview of the route being taken, pay the fare or change the climate functions in the back of the vehicle. The driver is faced by a similar screen that can be personalised to show any combination of information relating to the vehicle systems, passenger fare or navigation functions.

Honda is ending the production cycle of its Civic Type R sedan, with the last vehicles rolling off the Suzuka plant at the end of Aug. With that, Honda Malaysia will also end sales of the car locally then - Malaysia is the only country outside of Japan to have the four-door Civic Type R.

Since its introduction, close to 12,000 units have been sold in both Japan and Malaysia, and to date, since its introduction here in Aug 2007, 234 units of the type have been sold locally.

At the moment, customers in Malaysia can still place orders for the Civic Type R, which is priced at RM199,800, at any authorised Honda dealer, so if you want one before it's gone, best be quick about it.

It's not something you'll see parked in your neighbour's porch, heaven forbid, or stuck alongside you in your daily crawl to work (well, it wouldn't really be stuck in traffic ...), but it has wheels, eight to be precise, and eight-wheel drive to boot, so it makes the news run here ...

It's called the Rosomak 8x8 armoured modular vehicle, and Naza Bumar, a subsidiary of Naza Defence, unveiled it at the Defence Services Asia 2010 exhibition at Putra World Trade Centre. The Rosomak, which is Polish for wolverine, is developed by Polish company Bumar and is currently in use with the Polish Land Forces in contigents serving in Afghanistan, Chad and Iraq as well as in the armed forces of Croatia, Finland, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

The main feature of the vehicle is in its modular design, which allows the incorporation of different turrets, weapons, sensors, and communications systems on the same platform. Weighing in between 18 and 26 tonnes depending on variants with different armour, turrets/weapons systems, ammunition and crew configurations, the 7.8m long vehicle is powered by a Scania DI 12 56A03PE 12l diesel engine offering 480bhp and 1,970Nm of torque, with a ZF 7HP 902S Ecomat seven-speed gearbox powering all eight wheels.

Specs include a top speed of over 100kmh and a range of 800km, and it even has amphibious capability - two shrouded propellers, one on each side at the rear of the hull, offer a swimming speed of around 10kmh.

Features include good mine protection and the ability to withstand explosions up to 10kg in TNT charges, as well as a frontal arc ballistic protection level of up to 30mm APFSDS rounds. It comes with independent suspension for all eight wheels, 14.00 R 20 tyres with run flat devices, disc brakes and a central tyre inflation system.

There are plenty of deployment options for the Rosomak, but the infanty fighting vehicle variant, equipped with an Oto Melara Hitfist-30P gun turret and 30mm ATK Mk 44 chain gun/7.62mm NATO round UKM-2000C machine gun combi should be the preferred choice on urban streets ....

Four races into the Formula One season, evidence is steadily accumulating that Michael Schumacher is no longer the indomitable driver he once was.

The seven-time Formula One champion's much-hyped comeback is quickly proving an anti-climax. Instead of being carefully thought out, it is beginning to look like the vain folly of a middle-aged man who got bored in retirement and who missed racing's adrenaline buzz but who also made the mistake of kidding himself that he still has that old magic.

At 41, Schumacher is showing his age. There's no mistaking how the tight face-squeezing fit of his race helmet bunches and accentuates the telltale wrinkles around his eyes. The racing rust is proving troublesome, hard to shake off. Unless he can quickly get back up to speed, F1's most successful driver could, at this rate, go the entire season without winning a race.

Younger drivers have easily had his measure, even in the rain where Schumacher's sure touch of the wheel, controlled love of risk and steady nerves once made him so hard to beat. The aura of quasi-invincibility that once surrounded Schumacher hasn't followed him out of retirement. Now, he merely looks ordinary, a cold truth that McLaren's Lewis Hamilton indirectly acknowledged this weekend.

"It's just as exciting as racing with any other driver" was Hamilton's ho-hum response when asked what it is like to compete against the German who owns a big chunk of F1's records.

The most damning evidence of Schumacher's decline is that his teammate Nico Rosberg, 17 years his junior, is driving brilliantly in exactly the same car.

In Rosberg's hands, the Mercedes looks competitive, even though it clearly lacks the blinding all-around pace of the Red Bulls and the straight-line speed of the McLarens. The 24-year-old German manages to make the car appear better than it is, whereas Schumacher makes it look sluggish.

Rosberg is consistently quicker than Schumacher in qualifying, always placing himself on the first three rows of the grid where there is less risk from traffic and accidents at the start.

And Rosberg does the job in the race, too. With the exception of the somewhat dull Red Bull-dominated Malaysian Grand Prix, where he started second but finished third, Rosberg is placing better in the race or finishing just as highly as he did in qualifying.

The reverse is true for Schumacher. Only at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix did he make up a place, from seventh in qualifying to sixth at the checkered flag.

In Australia, Schumacher qualified seventh but finished 10th, after colliding with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and taking an age to get past Jaime Alguersuari in his modest Toro Rosso.

In Malaysia, Schumacher was undone by a wheelnut failure, hardly his fault. But he can take some of the blame for his poor driving this weekend in China, where he qualified ninth - more than half a second slower than Rosberg - and finished 10th. He was in and out of the pits like a yo-yo for tire changes as he struggled with the wet-dry, wet-again track conditions. On lap 14, when he had already switched tires twice, Schumacher radioed to his engineers that it was raining again, in essence wondering whether he should come in for another change.

"Nico has stayed on dry tires all the time," came the telling response. In short, the youngster's doing fine while you seem at sea.

"One of those races that you do not want to remember," Schumacher said later. "Not good for me and not good from me."

With F1 now heading back to Europe for the Spanish Grand Prix on May 9, Schumacher has a mere 10 points with 15 races remaining, compared to 50 for the consistent Rosberg and 60 for leader Jenson Button, the world champion disproving those who predicted his downfall after his off-season switch to McLaren.

A disastrous comeback, if that is what this turns out to be, can never taint or diminish Schumacher's achievements of the past, when he was in his prime. His seven world titles, 91 Grand Prix wins and his dominance with Ferrari are all safely locked away in F1's history books.

But neither can he rest on those laurels. Unless Schumacher starts proving again - and soon - that he can still win, then it will be legitimate to suggest that he should have stayed retired, getting his kicks from parachuting, motorbike riding and testing Ferrari road cars instead of trying to turn back time in an F1 cockpit. - By John Leicester/AP

Edaran Tan Chong Motor has introduced a 4x2 variant of the Nissan Navara pickup truck, and this one is called the Calibre 4X2 Automatic.

The Calibre 4X2 is equipped with a YD25DDTi 2.5l commonrail direct-injection turbodiesel pot as found on the Navara 4x4 variants, though the version here is a medium output unit - power is trimmed to 142bhp as opposed to the 172bhp found in the high-output block, both at a similar 4,000rpm; likewise the torque, with 356Nm on call at 2,000rpm (compared to the HO unit's 403Nm). Transmission is a five-speed auto.

The Calibre gets most of the features found in the Navara range, though it does omit airbags from the list (as does the 4x4 manual version of the vehicle) and also out is the passenger side A-pillar assist grip, though that's hardly likely to be noticed. Elsewhere, it's business as usual.

The Thai-made Navara Calibre 4X2 is available in a special Desert Gold shade alongside Supreme Black, Tungsten Silver and Twilight Gray. It's priced at RM89,900, on the road inclusive of insurance, and comes with a 3-year or 100,000km warranty.

Hydrogen, one of Earth's most abundant elements, once was seen as green energy's answer to the petroleum-driven car: easy to produce, available everywhere and nonpolluting when burned.

Hydrogen energy was defeated by a mountain of obstacles - the fear of explosion by the highly flammable gas, the difficulty of carrying the fuel in large, heavy tanks in the vehicle, and the lack of a refueling network. Automakers turned to biofuels, electricity or the gas-electric hybrid.

But hydrogen, it turns out, never was completely out of the race. Now Israeli scientists and entrepreneurs claim to have brought hydrogen energy a step closer by putting it in much smaller, lighter containers.

Rather than using metal or composite cylinders of compressed gas that look like bulky scuba gear, hydrogen is packed into glass filaments which, once out of the lab, will be only slightly thicker than a human hair. These 370 glass capillaries are bundled into a glass tube called a capillary array, about the width of a drinking straw. The scientists say 11,000 such arrays will fuel a car for 400km, take less than half the space and weight of tanks currently installed in the few hydrogen cars now available.

"We have shown new materials that can store more hydrogen than any other system," says Dan Eliezer, chief scientist of C.En Ltd, the company based in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Israelis are developing their invention.

The scientists make no attempt to improve the standard fuel cell, which is not much different today from when it was invented more than 150 years ago. A fuel cell makes electricity from chemical reactions involving hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapuor as a byproduct. The fuel cell can be compared with a standard car's engine, while the capillary arrays would be comparable to the gasoline tank.

The system was unveiled in Berlin at a demonstration for The Associated Press at the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, known as BAM, which has been testing the materials since 2008 and has pronounced the system safe. Also attending was a representative of Italian-based Generali Insurance, which has invested US$10mil in the project.

While its backers call the technology a breakthrough, it is unlikely to gain traction without a large injection of capital to scale up development. It also would need a distribution system and the support of major car companies, which have poured billions of dollars into their own closely guarded research programs.

Auto companies "are still investing significant amounts of money in hydrogen and fuel cells," and have hundreds of researchers working on the technology, said David Hart, director of E4tech, a business and energy consultancy in London. Automakers refuse to disclose details of their research or funding.

Hart said the glass capillaries appear to be an "interesting" technology that would be "very significant" if it were to provide the energy claimed by the company. But if it means creating a new refueling infrastructure, "it may still not be the right answer for cars," he said.

Like electric cars, the driving force behind hydrogen research is the need to break away from oil and rein in emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change, especially carbon dioxide from industry and transport. Transportation adds about 13% of man-made carbon to the atmosphere.

Hydrogen boasts zero emissions. It can be produced from water through electrolysis, or harvested as the waste product of nuclear reactors and chemical plants.

"In terms of saving carbon dioxide, you do a great deal more with renewable hydrogen," said Danny Dicks, a biofuels expert from the British consultancy group Innovation Observatory. "So ultimately, hydrogen is where things ought to be driving toward."

Automakers, for now, still are focused on battery power. At the Geneva Motor Show last month, nearly all major manufacturers displayed their latest electric vehicles or plans to produce them. The few hydrogen vehicles on the floor attracted little attention.

It was not always that way. Former US President George W. Bush allocated US$1.2bil for hydrogen research and said in his 2003 State of the Union address: "The first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen and pollution free." The Obama administration largely scrapped the program.

In Europe, too, hydrogen is low-priority. The Dutch government, for example, recently announced a euro 5mil (US$6.75mil) subsidy for hydrogen, but gave eight times more for electric cars. Buyers of plug-ins get tax breaks and rebates, and cities like London and Amsterdam are planting charge-up pillars on their streets.

"Electricity is taking all the subsidy schemes. It's taking it away from hydrogen," said Robert van den Hoed of Ecofys, an independent Dutch consultancy on renewable energy.

The main reason is cost. Electric cars are road-ready and in production, while hydrogen vehicles are still experimental. Nissan's new electric car, the Leaf, will go on sale for about US$25,000 in the US, including a government rebate.

Honda has produced a roadworthy hydrogen vehicle, the FCX Clarity, but it is not for sale. Only 50 of them are available for lease in the US at US$600 per month; Honda says it intends to increase the fleet to 200 this year. Honda declines to put a sales tag on the Clarity, but some experts say the market price would be US$1mil each. Toyota, a leader in electric car technology, plans to put its first hydrogen vehicle on the road in 2015.

Last Dec, the German luxury carmaker BMW ended an experimental run of 100 hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines and retreated back into the laboratory for more research. "We learned everything we wanted to learn from this huge field test," said spokesman Tobias Hahn, and BMW is now working on the next generation.

"We are still committed to hydrogen as the long-term alternative for switching to sustainable mobility," Hahn said, speaking from Munich, adding that the biggest problem is on-board storage.

Among US carmakers, General Motors produced a test fleet of 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell cars and let 5,000 people test them over a 25 month period. Like BMW, Chevrolet is withdrawing the vehicles to upgrade the technology.

A combination of plug-in electric and hydrogen may emerge as the most eco-friendly solution. "A fuel cell hybrid looks like a good long-term option," said Hart. "It's not an either-or. It's both, most likely."

Public transport also is experimenting with hydrogen. The Vancouver Winter Olympics deployed 20 fuel cell buses. The European Union and 31 industries teamed up to run a four-year trial of hydrogen buses on regular passenger routes in 10 cities ending last year, and a new generation of buses will begin operating later this year, said Frits van Drunen, who runs the project for the Dutch public transport network GVB.

"We predict that by 2017 these buses will be priced per kilometer at the same level as diesel buses," said van Drunen, interviewed at GVB's hydrogen refueling station in Amsterdam.

At BAM, the Berlin testing site, researchers guided a remote-controlled model truck around the laboratory floor powered by a fuel cell and three hydrogen-filled arrays bound together, about the thickness of a thumb. A similar device lit up a panel with 20 LED bulbs. The researchers say such devices can be built into power packs for laptop computers and even mobile phones.

BAM's research director, Kai Holtapples, said the C.En system can be on the road within two to five years if it can be developed as a replaceable rack that can be swapped at filling stations. Eventually, cars will be able to refuel with nozzles, like gas pumps today, he said. "Both systems will need some engineering, of course, but some ideas already exist." BAM has no financial stake in the capillary array project, he said.

Moshe Stern, C.En's chief executive, said the electric car will dominate the market for years to come, but the cheap and unlimited supply of hydrogen will make it the power source of the future. Within a few years, perhaps a decade, hydrogen fuel will shift the world's energy balance away from oil, he said.

"The real revolution is not the technical revolution, it is the political revolution," said Stern. "We are Israelis. We know what it means to be blackmailed by oil," he said. - AP

Some vehicles do build up a reputation, they do. Take Toyota's Hilux, for instance. The legendary pick-up that Top Gear simply could not destroy and which was the first car to be driven across the Arctic to the Magnetic North Pole has added another feather to its cap, this time at Eyjafallajökull.

The pickup proved the perfect transport for scientists racing to set up monitoring equipment on the Icelandic volcano, just hours before the long-dormant mountain erupted and brought chaos to the skies of Europe.

The vehicles used for the expedition were prepared by specialist firm Arctic Trucks to the same extreme environment specification as the Hilux used by Jeremy Clarkson and James May for their historic polar expedition.

With giant low pressure 38-inch tyres, the go-anywhere Hilux had the measure of every challenge in its path as it made its way through ice and snow towards the volcano’s fiery heart. Just the sort of thing that helps the legend grow even more, yup.

The world is still waiting to see what kind of auto design emerges from the alliance of Italy's Fiat and America's Chrysler. One thing is clear: there's a lot of Italian flair to draw on, in the person of Fiat's design chief Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

Ramaciotti helped design everything from the high-end Ferrari Enzo to the economical Peugeot 407 during his career at independent styling house Pininfarina. Expect some surprises ahead.

"Italian design can't be repetitive. It must be a design that is a little surprising, with something innovative from one model to the next," said Ramaciotti in an interview in his modest office at Fiat's Centro Stile, decorated with logos of the six Fiat brands whose style he commands.

Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

How much of that Italian flair will seep into the Chrysler's designs is still being worked out, nearly a year after Fiat took a controlling stake in the United States' third-largest automaker. Chrysler has its own design operation, but Ramaciotti would be key partner in any cooperation.

In the Ramaciotti world, cars aren't mere vessels of transport - but an expression of an idea. Fiat is fun and friendly, simple solutions. Alfa Romeo is fast, sporty, attention-grabbing.

"If you have a car that takes you from point A to point B, why not have it be nice? If you are capable, why not?" Ramaciotti asks.

Lancia, which is being twinned with the Chrysler brand, will be the harbinger of Italian design: "Good taste, proportionality, all the elements that we are recognised for," he said. By "we," he meant Italian design, not Fiat.

"Italian automobile design was for many years the beacon for the world. Now it has been weakened. Why? Because we exported our design culture," Ramaciotti said. First to Japan, where Italians designed a lot of cars in the 1970s. Then in Korea, for Daewoo and Hyundai, and now China.

Ramaciotti's first move at Fiat was to bring all of Fiat's brands, except the extremely expensive Ferrari, under one roof. No longer designing cars himself, Ramaciotti oversees the the process - keeping the creative staff on deadline - at Fiat's sprawling 20,000sq m design centre at the Mirafiori plant in Turin.

This little tyke will be US-bound.

Ramaciotti has a broad portfolio, six brands under one roof: the flagship Fiat brand, sporty Alfa Romeo, up-market Lancia, luxury Maserati, amped-up Abarth and sturdy Fiat light commercial vehicles. The two companies will share platforms and the first Fiat to return to the US market - the Cinquecento, or 500 - is being rolled out later this year, with a few tweaks aimed at American tastes.

The car will look the same on the outside as the original compact retro-chic three-door hatchback that has charmed Europeans. But the American market required some adjustments: wider seats, cupholders, arm rests, automatic transmissions, and larger license plate holders. Fiat is offering colours, like sand, that are more suited to American tastes than, say, the Italian green-white-and-red striped paint job sold in Europe.

"The general flavour of the car has remained very much Italian," Ramaciotti said. "It has such personality that we think that even the Americans will buy it in the Italian colors. Someone who buys a 500 does not buy it just as a means of transport, but because it is cute and European."

Fiat isn't expecting to sell huge volumes of the 500 in the US - around 50,000 to 80,000 a year - figuring the appeal for the tiny car will mostly be in big cities. But it is the car that relaunched the Fiat brand in Europe. And it will be the Fiat that introduces American drivers to Chrysler's new bosses.

While the tiny 500 will be Fiat's Italian emissary to North America, the zippy new Giulietta, Alfa Romeo's latest launch, is unlikely to make the trans-Atlantic passage. The Giulietta is a hatchback, and Americans have scorned hatchbacks, despite all their practicality, in favor of SUVs and crossovers, Ramaciotti said.

The Giulietta made its debut at the Geneva auto show and will go on sale later this month in Europe. It is the car that is supposed to relaunch the Alfa Romeo brand and give it a new chance after a disappointing couple of years. But what will go to the United States is the new Compact platform that the Giulietta is built on - a billion-dollar investment that Marchionne wants to squeeze at least one million cars from.

And this one won't be going - the Giuletta.

In fact, much of what Fiat contributes to Chrysler will not be visible to consumers in terms of style but in the form of cleaner-burning engines and small-car platforms. In Europe, Fiat expects to take advantage of Chrysler's larger car and minivan platforms.

So far in the alliance, Fiat and Chrysler are maintaining separate design centres. Still, the Fiat and Chrysler alliance is slowly growing more entwined, as evident in the appointment of Lancia brand CEO Olivier Francois to run the Chrysler brand.

The Fiat Design Center has been holding back several new models, waiting for the crisis to abate. Ramaciotti won't say how many, deferring until Apr 21, when Fiat presents its new five-year business plan.

Analysts expect Fiat will announce plans for a new Panda in 2011, the next generation Punto, new small vans, sometimes called multi-purpose vehicles or MPVs, possibly based on Chrysler's successful minivan, still known in Europe as the Grand Voyager and in the US as Town & Country. Fiat may also announce a new Lancia Ypsilon, a new Lancia Delta, as well as mid-size and large sedans, based on Chrysler platforms. And there may be a new flagship car for Alfa Romeo.

"To come out with a new car in such a depressed market means losing 20% of sales. The peak, when you theoretically should sell the most cars, is when you present the car. You risk ruining yourself at the best moment," Ramaciotti said.

"On the other hand, you can't rely only on the old lineup of cars, with the old cars for an eternity. It's a difficult choice." - AP

Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Malaysia has moved into high gear in the development of motor sports in the country as it has huge potential and a most promising future for Malaysia.

"We are taking take it seriously and working on whatever we can do to develop the ability of our people and training programmes in this sporting arena," Ahmad Shabery said after handing over the Jalur Gemilang to Proton Holdings group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir on behalf of the Proton R3 Malaysian rally team, to mark the 2010 Asia Pacific Rally Championship season.

Syed Zainal Abidin said motor sports are one of several key areas Proton is pursuing to establish itself as a global brand and involvement in such events would create more awareness in its potential markets.

"Motor racing, including rallying, will serve as a proving ground for Proton with the hope that some innovative elements derived from competition can also be translated into improving our products," he said.

The rally programme, run in collaboration with Mellors Elliot Motorsport, will see Proton fielding two Satria NEO S2000 rally cars in six of the seven rounds of the championship.

Proton's APRC campaign will be spearheaded by former World Rally Championship drivers Alister McRae and co-driver Bil Hayes as well as Chris Atkinson and co-driver Stephane Prevot.

McRae and Hayes had played a significant role in helping develop the Satria NEO S2000 in 2009, while Atkinson and Prevot were formerly with the renowned Subaru world rally team and two-time winners of the Asia Pacific Super 1600 Championship in 2003 and 2004.

Round one of the 2010 APRC kicks off with the Rally of Malaysia on April 23 before culminating in China on Nov 7.

Syed Zainal Abidin said Proton is also evaluating the prospects of entering the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

If that happens, its campaign will begin with Round One in Sardinia, Italy on June 4

KUCHING, April 9 — UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd has sold 21,017 units of Toyota vehicles for the first quarter of this year, up 22 per cent from the same period last year.

Its president Kuah Kock Heng said in the same period last year, the company sold a total of 17,200 units despite the challenging year for the auto industry and based on the current figures, it was likely to hit the sales target for this year.

“With this positive momentum, I am confident of achieving our target of 88,000 units or 16.0 per cent market share,” he said at a media reception here today.

Last year, the company sold more than 82,000 units with a market share of 15.4 per cent and it has been the number one for the non-national vehicles segment for the past 20 years.

For Sarawak, Kuah said the state continued to be an important market as it contributed 10 per cent or 8,300 units of the total Toyota vehicles sold in the country last year.

“The Toyota Hilux remains the number one contributor to Toyota sales with 3,248 units or 40 per cent of total sales in Sarawak,” he said, adding that based on the selling trend this year, the Hilux would again be the top-selling model in Sarawak, followed by passengers cars like Vios, Camry and Corolla as well as multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) like Avanza, Innova and Fortuner.

“For the first quarter of this year, we have delivered 968 units on Sarawak roads. This is a 35 per cent increase compared to 715 units in the same period last year,” Kuah said.

“Currently, we are looking at network expansion in Sarawak to enhance sales and after-sales facilities to cater the needs of our customers. Right now, upgrading projects are in progress at our outlets in Kuching and Miri,” he said.

Asked to elaborate on the network expansion programme in Sarawak, Kuah said it would also involve relocating some of the branches which are considered small.

WASHINGTON, April 14 — Embattled Japanese automaker Toyota received another hammer-blow to its safety reputation yesterday as a respected US consumer magazine warned readers not to buy one of its Lexus models.

Consumer Reports gave the 2010 Lexus GX 460 SUV a rare “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” rating after conducting tests on the car.

“When pushed to its limits on our track’s handling course, the rear of the GX we bought slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control,” the magazine said.

“We believe that in real-world driving, that situation could lead to a rollover accident, which could cause serious injury or death. We are not aware, however, of any such reports.”

Toyota said it was concerned by the rating and had not experienced any similar problems in its own tests.

“We will try to duplicate the Consumer Reports’ test to determine if appropriate steps need to be taken,” the company said in a statement.

“Customer safety and satisfaction remain our highest priorities. We take the Consumer Reports’ test results seriously and appreciate Consumer Reports bringing it to our attention.”

The last time Consumer Reports issued a “Don’t Buy” warning was 2001, for a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero.

Toyota has recalled millions of cars in the United States since late 2009, over a series of problems linked to “unintended acceleration.”

The recalls have caused an outcry in the United States, with Toyota executives hauled over the coals by Congress and the company’s previously stellar reputation for safety left in tatters.

The company faces a record 16.4 million dollar fine in the United States for hiding dangerous defects in its cars from consumers and watchdogs.

Toyota also has been hit with at least 97 lawsuits seeking damages for injury or death linked to sudden acceleration and 138 class action lawsuits from angry customers suing to recoup losses in the resale value of Toyota vehicles following the recalls.

TOKYO, April 15 —Toyota Motor Corp today denied a Kyodo News agency report that it will voluntarily recall the Lexus GX460 sport utility vehicle, sold in North America, Russia and the Middle East.

“We are in the process of testing whether there is anything wrong with the model,” spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi said.

“At this point there is no discussion about a voluntary recall.”

DETROIT, April 17 — Toyota Motor Corp said yesterday it would recall 870,000 Sienna minivans sold in the United States and Canada since the 1998 model year because of a risk that the spare tyre could drop into the road.

The recalls cover minivans sold in several cold weather US states and Canada due to potential corrosion from long-term exposure to road salt that could in the worst case, cause the spare tyre to separate from the vehicle, Toyota said.

All told, the recalls cover some 600,000 two-wheel drive Sienna minivans from the 1998 to 2010 model years sold or registered in certain cold weather US states and 270,000 of the same vehicles in Canada.

The recalls are the latest in a string that has marred Toyota’s reputation for quality. On Tuesday, Toyota halted sales of its Lexus GX 460 luxury SUV after Consumer Reports said its handling in certain curves posed a “safety risk.”

The automaker has not yet decided whether it would have to recall the Lexus GX 460, but has said its engineers duplicated the results of Consumer Reports’ tests.

For the recalls announced yesterday, Toyota said the Sienna minivans should be inspected by dealers while Toyota develops a remedy. They said in the recalls that a cable holding the spare tire in place could fail due to corrosion.

US owners outside the cold weather states will receive a separate notice and may have their vehicles inspected and repaired if necessary at no charge as well, Toyota said.

The US recall covers the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia. — Reuters

Ford is the first automaker in Malaysia to offer such an plan, which began on Apr 1. Effectively, ESP complements the existing factory warranty period of three years or 100,000km with a series of services that cover the first three years or 60,000km, whichever comes first.

The ESP covers – at no charge to the customer – regular checkups, routine inspections, preventative care and replacement of normal “wear and tear” items. In addition, the premium maintenance coverage includes engine oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, replacement of brake pads and linings when worn, shock absorber replacements as well as spark plugs, engine belts and hoses, clutch discs and wiper blades. Sounds sweet, the deal, yes?
