Volkswagen has unveiled its all-electric Golf blue-e-motion concept, with the production version slated to make its market debut two years from now.

The Golf blue-e-motion is powered by an electric motor developing 113bhp and 270Nm of torque, powered by lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 26.5kWh. The car’s battery unit is located in the bootspace (leaving a useful 237l of remaining cargo space, under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel (between the front seats).

The electric motor, transmission and differential along with high-voltage pulse-controlled inverter, the 12V electrical system, DC/DC converter and charging module, all mounted in the engine bay, adds only 205kg to the total weight compared to a Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG, and this despite the fact that electric car batteries are known to be heavy and weigh 1,545kg on the concept car.

Performance figures include a 0-100kmh time of 11.8secs and a top speed of 140kmh, as well as a range of 150km between charges.

A fleet of 500 Golf blue-e-motion prototypes will begin testing next year in real-world conditions ahead of production two years later.

Alongside the introduction of the concept Golf, the company has outlined its future programme for electric and hybrid production vehicles.

It will launch its first all-electric vehicles in 2013, and these will be in the form of the Up! blue-e-motion followed by the Golf blue-e-motion and the Jetta blue-e-motion. Also slated for release later in the year is an electric version of the Lavida for the Chinese market.

As for hybrids, the Touareg Hybrid is already in the market, followed by a hybrid Jetta in 2012 and hybrid versions of the Golf and Passat in 2013
