Nissan has just the answer for those who don’t really need a pick-up packing a 4X4.

HANDS up all those who own a 4X4 SUV or pick-up truck.

Wow, seems like quite a number of you. Hands up those who actually shift it into four-wheel drive mode for a spot of jungle bashing.

As I suspected, just a few of you. Many people who buy 4X4s never actually take advantage of the 4X4 drive system. Instead, they buy SUVs and 4X4 pick-up trucks for the spaciousness and versatility.

And in the case of most pick-up trucks, they tend to be really good buys too, with their prices comparable to their much smaller entry-level sedan siblings.

Enter the new Nissan Navara Calibre 4X2 twin cab pick-up truck, another variant of the Navara 4X4 Mother Trucker.

And for ease of writing, I’ll refer to the 4X2 variant as the Calibre and the 4X4 as the Mother Trucker.

As its name implies, the Navara Calibre is two-wheel drive, which means only two of the four wheels drive the vehicle along, in this case, the rear wheels.

At first glance, you will not notice any difference between the Calibre and 4X4 Mother Trucker.

In fact, try as hard as you may, you won’t find differences at all. The Calibre 4X2 shares the same classy good looks as the Mother Trucker.

The exterior dimensions are exactly the same.

Likewise the cargo bed, interior layout, the seating arrangement and just about everything else that can be seen with the naked eye are the same.

Short of bringing out the X-ray machine, no external differences are perceivable until you take a peek at the undercarriage.

The Calibre lacks a 4X4 drive system, which makes it some 120kg lighter than the Mother Trucker.

You would think that the Calibre would have a weight advantage when comparing performance but the engine has been slightly detuned.

That is about the only difference you’re going to find.

Both Calibre and Mother Trucker share the same 2,488 cc 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. But as mentioned before, the Calibre’s engine has been detuned to a maximum 144bhp at 4,000rpm as opposed to the Mother Trucker’s 174bhp.

A loss of 30bhp is a significant difference but because of the Calibre’s lighter weight, the detuned engine doesn’t have to work as hard.

I could not perceive any difference in performance between the Calibre 4X2 and the 4X4 Mother Trucker, which I reviewed quite some time back. Maximum torque is also down – 356Nm at 2,000 rpm for the Calibre compared to the Mother Trucker’s 403Nm.

Mated to the diesel engine is the same five-speed auto box as the Mother Trucker’s. You’ll only find five-speed auto transmissions on some higher-end imported vehicles.

I found the gear ratios well spaced to take advantage of the torque without causing much strain on the engine.

This was particularly useful on the highways where the transmission kicked down smoothly for quick spurts of acceleration while overtaking.

And to keep it all nice and safe, the Calibre also comes with anti-lock braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), the latter usually found in more expensive vehicles.

Due to inertia and the laws of physics a fully loaded pick-up truck will take a longer distance to stop than an unladen one.

EBD will take into account the weight of the cargo load and apply an optimised brakeforce to help stop the vehicle in a shorter and safer distance.

The actual driveability of the Calibre’s engine on the road is still quite impressive.

The Calibre did exceptionally well on the highway, keeping up with much of the traffic. The Calibre has been configured specifically for asphalt.

In fact, it feels and drives like an oversized sedan except that the Calibre is built rock solid.

But being designed as a two-wheel drive, it lacks the necessary off-road gear like chunky tyres, diffs, rock sliders and a winch.

But because the Calibre shares much of its DNA with bad boy Mother Trucker, you are assured that it’s not going to be perturbed by the numerous potholes and speed bumps that litter our urban streets.

I dare say that it probably will also do well on light gravel or laterite trails that are found in numerous rubber and oil palm estates.

Just make sure you do it in the dry because two-wheel drive isn’t really suited for muddy conditions.

Did I mention that the Calibre is huge?

With an overall length of more than 5.2 metres and an overall width of just over 1.8 metres, the Calibre and the Mother Trucker are not so manoeuvrable in tight spaces like a hypermarket car park.

Thank goodness, the Calibre is equipped with a reverse sensor or I would be backing it into a pillar or someone’s car.

It would also be nice if all the Navara variants could be equipped with a reverse camera as an option.

Designed more for the urban jungle rather than the rainforests, the Navara Calibre 4X2 is a great vehicle if you want a pick-up truck but not the four-wheel drive that comes with it.

The Navara Calibre 4x2 is yours for RM90,278 OTR with insurance.

During recent Super GT race we have seen the GT-R being used as the safety car, but the one that you see here was specially re-designed by Nissan for Nurburgring GmbH to provide the fastest possible response to emergency calls at Nurburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.

Equipped with a fire extinguishing system with water and foam on board attached to a hose pipe accessed via the sizeable boot, this NISSAN GT-R is designed to get to the scene of a blaze in the quickest possible time. In standard road-car form, the Nissan GT-R is capable of lapping the famous Nordschleife in only 7 mins 26 seconds 70*, making it the perfect tool for the Nurburgring’s emergency services. Even with the extra 200kg of fire fighting equipment on board, the Nissan GT-R can still lap the challenging circuit in less than 8 minutes.

The redesigned Nissan GT-R is a gift from Nissan to the Nurburgring operator in thanks for the company’s collaboration in developing the 485PS supercar. The fire-fighting conversion was carried out by M&M Automotive, a Bonn-based specialist for car development and motor sports.

The Nissan GT-R’s two standard backseats were taken out and replaced with a 50-litre water tank, which was secured with a roll cage.

There is a medium-pressure extinguisher system (20 bars) as well as a winding device for the hose. The only other differences between this Nissan GT-R and one straight from the factory is the additional radio communication system, the new Recaro sports seats and the roll bar. With a foam reach of around 18 meters and a 20-metre hose, the unit will be able to fight fire for around two minutes on one tank.

Edaran Tan Chong Motor has introduced a 4x2 variant of the Nissan Navara pickup truck, and this one is called the Calibre 4X2 Automatic.

The Calibre 4X2 is equipped with a YD25DDTi 2.5l commonrail direct-injection turbodiesel pot as found on the Navara 4x4 variants, though the version here is a medium output unit - power is trimmed to 142bhp as opposed to the 172bhp found in the high-output block, both at a similar 4,000rpm; likewise the torque, with 356Nm on call at 2,000rpm (compared to the HO unit's 403Nm). Transmission is a five-speed auto.

The Calibre gets most of the features found in the Navara range, though it does omit airbags from the list (as does the 4x4 manual version of the vehicle) and also out is the passenger side A-pillar assist grip, though that's hardly likely to be noticed. Elsewhere, it's business as usual.

The Thai-made Navara Calibre 4X2 is available in a special Desert Gold shade alongside Supreme Black, Tungsten Silver and Twilight Gray. It's priced at RM89,900, on the road inclusive of insurance, and comes with a 3-year or 100,000km warranty.

Nissan's new Leaf electric car will cost just over US$25,000 when it goes on sale in the US in Dec, aiming to bring gasoline-free technology within reach of mainstream drivers.

The four-door hatchback will have a base price of US$32,780, but it's eligible for a US$7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles. That will make it cheaper to buy than electric vehicles coming from rivals and may force competitors to cut prices. But the Leaf's limited range of just 160km per charge for its lithium-ion battery could be a dealbreaker for some motorists.

"We want to make sure the car is affordable, ready for the mass market and has mass appeal," Mark Perry, director of product planning and advanced technology at Nissan North America said in an interview.

Customers can start reserving a Leaf in the US on Apr 20 and Nissan is aiming for 25,000 orders by Dec. It hopes to build and sell 50,000 of the cars around the world during the first model year. Production is starting at an existing factory in Oppama, Japan, south of Tokyo, and will expand to Nissan's factory in Smyrna, Tennessee, in 2012.

Christopher Richter, an auto analyst at CLSA Asia Pacific Markets in Tokyo, predicted the car will prove popular among "people who want to be green, people who love technology and people who are status-conscious."

Sales during the first year will be limited to about 20 large cities in the US, including New York, Seattle and Atlanta, Perry said. He said Nissan hopes to expand Leaf sales nationwide by the end of 2011.

The Leaf's relatively low starting price - as well as an option to lease the vehicle for US$349 a month - could touch off a price war among rivals. A spokesman for General Motors, which will begin selling its Chevrolet Volt electric car later this year, said it will look at Nissan's pricing before announcing its own closer to its Dec sales date.

The Volt is widely expected to cost around US$35,000 before the US$7,500 tax credit. Unlike the Leaf, the Volt is not a pure electric car. Instead it's propelled by electricity stored in a battery for up to 64km, at which point a gasoline engine kicks in, giving it hundreds of kilometres more in range.

Perry said the Leaf's 160km range is more than adequate for the distance driven by most Americans in a given day. Still, analysts say the psychological effect of so-called range anxiety might be an obstacle for the Leaf. The Volt's internal combustion engine eases that concern by allowing drivers to continue going long after the electric charge is depleted.

It will take about eight hours to recharge a Leaf using a 220-volt electric plug - the kind used by most electric clothes dryers. Charging using a standard 110-volt outlet could take twice that. Nissan is giving Leaf customers the option of buying a home charging station at an estimated cost, including installation, of US$2,200. That cost can be offset by a 50% tax credit up to US$2,000. At average electricity rates, charging the Leaf would cost about US$2.80 per charge.

Tax credits for plug-in electric vehicles top out at $7,500. The size of the credit shrinks by automaker after it's sold at least 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. The credit then phases out over a year.

The Volt has a smaller battery than the Leaf and can't go as far on full electric power. But it can be fully recharged in eight hours on a standard 110-volt home outlet. Using a 220-volt outlet, it takes less than four hours.

Nissan says the Leaf will cost 3.76mil yen (US$40,000) in Japan. It will price the car lower in the US because it wants to sell more of them in that market. But Perry said Nissan is confident the company will make a profit on each Leaf sold in the US at a lower list price. One reason is because Nissan owns the intellectual property to the battery, which was developed jointly by Nissan and NEC. "We control the battery costs," Perry said.

But Nissan may be deliberately setting the price low and may even lose money to establish itself as the market leader, said Erich Merkle, president of the consulting company Autoconomy.com in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Although the Volt can travel farther on a single charge, GM still has to compete with the Leaf on price, especially among motorists who have short commutes or a second car for long-distance travel, Merkle said.

So far, some 81,000 people in the US - where the Leaf went on a promotional 22-city tour earlier this year - have said they are interested in the car via Nissan's Web site. In Japan, some 9,300 people have signaled an interest. - AP

Nissan has announced the beginning of the pre-order process as well as market-specific pricing for consumers in Japan. Beginning Apr 1, Japanese consumers will be able to visit dealers throughout the country to place their orders for the Leaf. The company is targeting to sell 6,000 units in Japan in the 2010 fiscal year.

As for pricing, the Leaf will start from 3.76mil yen (RM130,344), and if current government incentives in Japan continue through 2010, the Leaf will be eligible for a 770,000-yen government incentive credit; with the incentive, the consumer’s net price for vehicle will be 2.99mil yen (RM103,640). The car will also be exempt from the car-weight tax and the car-acquisition tax.

Nissan is offering Japanese customers various purchasing methods, including a Nissan Auto Loan. For example, it has designed a program that allows consumers to pay only 2.4mil yen (RM83,190) as a downpayment and then a low monthly fee of 10,000 yen (RM347), which includes the cost for electricity.

Compared to cars in a similar class, Nissan says the Leaf’s cost of ownership is competitive. During six years of ownership, the electricity cost would be 86,000 yen (RM2,981). In contrast, the cost for a petrol-based vehicle in a similar class would be 670,000 yen (RM23,224).

The company will offer a variety of services to customers who purchase the Leaf, and this includes assisting customers in the installation of charging facilities for private homes.

Before the release of the vehicle in Dec, 200-volt regular chargers will be installed at all Nissan dealers nationwide, at a total of 2,200 locations. In addition, about 200 dealers will have quick-charging facilities - a quick charger provides 80% of battery capacity in less than 30 minutes. For the convenience of Leaf owners, at least one quick-charge unit will be available within a 40km radius throughout the country.

The company also announced that it is developing a new quick charger that is almost half the current market price of quick chargers available currently. The new quick charger will be installed at 200 Nissan dealers nationwide by Dec, and will be available commercially in the future.

Nissan, Suzuki, Daihatsu to recall cars in Japan

TOKYO, Feb 25 — Three Japanese carmakers announced recalls today, mostly in their home market and not on the same scale as recent moves by the likes of industry leader Toyota which heightened scrutiny of car safety.

Nissan Motor Co, Japan’s third-biggest carmaker, said it would recall 76,415 cars across 10 models in Japan and 2,281 cars overseas due to a possible defect that may cause engine failure.

Separately, Suzuki Motor, Japan’s No. 4 carmaker, said it would recall 432,366 units of two minicar models in Japan after two reported incidents of fire due to a possible defect in air conditioners.

Elsewhere, Daihatsu Motor said it would recall 60,774 units of four minicar models in Japan due to wiring problems that could trigger airbags to inflate accidentally.

Minivehicles, with an engine size of 660cc, are only sold in Japan.

The recalls follow the recall of more than 8 million cars by Toyota Motor Corp.

Nissan, 44 percent owned by French carmaker Renault SA, said it found a connecting terminal between circuit cords in the engine had in some cases been damaged in the testing process before the cars were sold.

The damaged component could cause the engine to fail during driving, spokesman Toshitake Inoshita said.

There have been no reported accidents and the number of cars affected overseas is small as all the engines involved were produced at plants in Japan, Inoshita said. — Reuters
