Sime Darby Auto Connexion’s second anniversary carnival, held in Petaling Jaya recently, was a success, with Ford, Land Rover and Alfa Romeo owners turning up in force to snap up the numerous attractive offers at the carnival.

Most of the customers who turned up made a beeline for the aftersales counter where a long list of spare parts were on sale at discounts of up to 80%. Genuine brand merchandises were also available at special prices.

Owners also took the opportunity to bring their cars, including some older models, in for the free 20-point check, while the children had plenty of fun at the giant inflatable play castle and the foosball table set up by Castrol.

At the Ford showroom, visitors took the opportunity to test-drive the latest models, including the newly-launched Ford Focus TDCi and the new Mondeo. The new Discovery 4 was at the centre of attention over at the Land Rover showroom, while the MiTo was made available for test drives at the Alfa Romeo showroom

Ford Motor Company and its local authorised distributor, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion, have introduced an industry leading Extended Service Plan (ESP) premium maintenance coverage scheme on its new Focus, Mondeo and Escape models.

Ford is the first automaker in Malaysia to offer such an plan, which began on Apr 1. Effectively, ESP complements the existing factory warranty period of three years or 100,000km with a series of services that cover the first three years or 60,000km, whichever comes first.

The ESP covers – at no charge to the customer – regular checkups, routine inspections, preventative care and replacement of normal “wear and tear” items. In addition, the premium maintenance coverage includes engine oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, replacement of brake pads and linings when worn, shock absorber replacements as well as spark plugs, engine belts and hoses, clutch discs and wiper blades. Sounds sweet, the deal, yes?

If you missed the preview of the all-new Ford Fiesta 1.6l hatchback last week at the One Utama Highstreet Concourse, you can catch the car at the AutoConneXion Ford PJ showroom until this Sun.

The five-door hatch, which is actually being loaned from Singapore, will give you a chance to get a feel and idea of what to expect when the Thai-made Fiesta arrives in the third quarter of the year, in both 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan forms.

Still here, until Sun.

There will be three variants of the Fiesta, led by the range-topping 120bhp 1.6l Duratec Ti-VCT hatch and then the 1.6l mid-line sedan engine, both of which will be equipped with a dual-clutch, six-speed PowerShift gearbox and with an indicative pricing of RM85k and RM80k respectively. The entry-level offering will be the 1.4l hatch, with a five-speed manual gearbox, priced around the RM75k mark.

Features include USB and Bluetooth connectivity and iPod compatibility across the board, cap-less refueling and 16-inch alloy wheels, and there'll be plenty of colours to choose from if you're looking at the top of the line hatch - there are seven shades to choose from, and the sedan and entry-level hatch have four colour options.

So, head on over to Ford PJ if you're keen to catch the Fiesta in the flesh.

The all-new Ford Fiesta 1.6l hatchback is in town for a sneak preview, ahead of its launch here later in the year. Until this Sun, Apr 11, the car will be on show at the One Utama Highstreet Concourse, so you can see firsthand what the little wonder is all about.

When it arrives in the third quarter, the Thai-made Fiesta will be available as a 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan, in three variant forms. There'll be a high-spec 1.6l hatch and mid-line 1.6l sedan, which will both be equipped with a dual-clutch, six-speed PowerShift gearbox, with tentative pricing at RM85k and RM80k respectively. The entry-level hatch will be a 1.4l version, with a five-speed auto gearbox, and indicative pricing is around the RM73k mark.

Features on the 120bhp 1.6l sedan and top-of-the-range hatch will include ABS and EBD and two airbags (though we hear the sedan will only get one, rather strangely), and other modcons include USB and Bluetooth connectivity and iPod compatibility across the board, cap-less refueling and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Sedan's not on show, but find out more about it this weekend ...

Seven colours will be available for the high-end hatch, with Chilli Orange being the signature colour. As for the sedan and entry-level 1.4l hatch, they get four colour options. No, the sedan's not on show, but you can find out more about the car from the Ford sales reps who'll be about, so head on over to 1U this weekend.

Ford and Microsoft have signed a deal to work together on a computerised link between houses, electric cars and utility companies to help manage energy use.

The companies said on Wed at the New York International Auto Show that this is the beginning of a smart system that will help utilities and customers manage energy costs and electrical generating capacity.

The system would start with the all-electric Ford Focus compact car that is scheduled to go on sale late in 2011. Called "Microsoft Hohm," it will allow utilities to vary electric rates based on the time of day. A computer would determine the best time to recharge the car at the lowest cost and the least burden on the utility's generating system.

Charging an electric car can double the energy used at a home, and utilities worry about the increased burden on their power generators. But charging the cars late at night, when appliances and other big electricity users aren't working, can help manage the load.

The companies have time to work out details of exactly how the system will work, figuring out electric rates and loads on generating systems, said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's global product development chief. Microsoft already has computer nodes for home thermostats and appliances to manage electricity use, he said.

"We're doing a lot to bring vehicles to market, but there has to be a lot of other work done from both a consumer and utility perspective to make this viable and affordable," Kuzak said. The system eventually will lead to homeowners being able to use their cars to power home appliances and cut costs at peak electricity use times, Ford CEO Alan Mulally said.

"As the batteries get more capable, we'll be able to store the electricity and then actually start to move the electricity around to where you really need it," he said.

Ford says the software to charge the cars will be included at no additional cost. Ford and Microsoft are not the first to start such an effort. Many utilities and other companies have been working on "smart home" technology for several years. - AP

With its arrival into the market, the Ford Focus TDCi becomes the first C-segment diesel-powered passenger car to be launched here. The five-door hatch, which was officially introduced late last week, is powered by a 2.0l Duratorq TDCi commonrail turbodiesel engine.

The pot, a PSA/Ford-derived design that is also known as the HDi on Peugeot/Citroen vehicles, is a 16 valve, twin cam unit utilising a variable geometry turbocharger with an overboost function, and offers an output of 134bhp at 4,000rpm and 320Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. Under full acceleration, the engine calibration allows the B5 Biodiesel-compatible unit to exceed its maximum nominal torque of 320Nm by 20Nm for eight seconds, peaking at 340Nm during brief overboost periods.

The block is mated to a six-speed dual clutch Powershift transmission, which made its debut locally on the Volvo S40. Performance figures for the hatch include a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 5.8l/100km in a combined urban/extra urban cycle, a 0-100kmh sprint time of 9.9secs and a top speed of 200kmh.

Not much difference in this particular C307's shape and kit list over the petrol version - standard equipment includes rear parking aid sensors, one-touch power window control, an in-dash six-CD changer with an MP3 player/six speaker audio system and a power adjustable driver seat. And, the usual array of TLA's are to be found here - ABS, EBD, TCS, ESP and EBA (Emergency Brake Assist).

A short test run with the Focus TDCi sometime ago revealed a car with definitely more than decent poke - there's plenty of appeal in the low-end, and to say the car leaves its petrol sibling looking rather breathless, especially in the midband, would be understating it. Higher up the range, things level out somewhat quickly, but within its operating scope - that of city driving and the usual quick get-gos - the TDCi is a peppy thing indeed.

It's quite refined throughout its operating range, and the pot never feels muted. Likewise the dual-clutch Powershift tranny, which feels a more cohesive offering on the whole and sparklier in nature compared to its pairing with a similar displacement petrol block in its Volvo S40 cousin.

The brief impression certainly couldn't reveal if the overall consumption's as good as claimed, so we'll have to wait for a longer stint with the car to see how frugal it actually is.

Available in two colours, Diamond White and Panther Black, the Focus 2.0L Sport TDCi is priced at RM 128,888, on the road, inclusive of insurance. Throw in an additional RM600 if you choose to have yours adorning optional blue GT stripes, though you'll undoubtedly need the white one for that.

Sime Darby AutoConnexion has brought in an initial run of 10 units of the Focus TDCi, and right now, only five are left on sale, so if you want one, be quick about it.

Ford launched its first made-for-India B-segment car in Mumbai yesterday, as the US automaker continues its push into fast-growing Asian markets.

The four-door Figo, Italian for "cool," is the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker's first car designed - and priced - for the mass Indian market.

"Come heat, come dust, come monsoon rains or Delhi traffic, the Figo was born and bred for India," said Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India.

As the global auto industry suffers, India has been enjoying an auto boom. An economic rebound, rising incomes and pent-up demand drove car sales to 1,370,659 vehicles from Apr to Feb, 25% more than during the same period the previous year.

Ford has ramped up investment in China and India, but has been slow to adjust to the proclivities of Indian carbuyers, three quarters of whom buy super-small, super-affordable cars. The luxurious sedans Americans favour find little room on India's teeming streets, and they're priced stratospherically out of reach for a nation where the per capita income is about 43,750 rupees (US$960).

The Figo is different. Ford squeezed the car into a tiny frame - 3.8m long by 1.7m wide - to ease its passage through the tide of bullock carts, angry taxis, handcarts, motorbikes and cows that clog city roads. And they used easy-to-replace components, like bumpers, to handle the unavoidable dents and dings.

"The Figo team went to great lengths to ensure that key components are easily and affordably replaced," Boneham said. The car also has extra durable lubricating and cooling systems, to deal with India's extreme heat and torrential rains.

But its most Indian feature of all is the price. Starting at 349,900 (US$7,690), the Figo is within reach of "Sandeep," Ford's vision of its archetypal consumer - a 27-year-old man, recently married and ambitious, with an income of 300,000 to 400,000 rupees (US$6,000 to US$8,000) a year. "Sandeep" may be budget conscious, but he's not without aspirations. Higher-end Figos come with keyless entry and Bluetooth connectivity.

Like other global auto majors, Ford also hopes to turn India into a small car export hub. Boneham said the Figo would first ship to South Africa. "We'll be adding more markets as people across the region see how cool the Figo really is," he said. - AP
