Going green is the thing of the moment, and Ferrari have gone with the theme quite literally with a green concept car, which it has unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
The HY-KERS vettura laboratorio, or experimental vehicle, coloured in aforementioned shade, is based on the 599 GTB Fiorano but features an advanced, lightweight hybrid drivetrain. In this case, a compact, tri-phase, high-voltage electric motor weighing 40kg is coupled to the rear of the dual-clutch 7-speed F1 transmission.
It operates through one of the transmission’s two clutches and engages one of the two gearbox primary shafts. The electric motor produces more than 100bhp, with the company's goal being to offset every kilogram increase in weight by a gain of at least one horsepower.
As well as managing the power supply and recharging the batteries, which are positioned below the floorpan of the car, a dedicated electronics module also powers the engine’s ancillaries (power steering, power-assisted brakes, air conditioning, on-board systems) via a generator mounted on the V12 block when running 100% under electric drive. The neat news is that the system doesn't cut into cabin or luggage space, and the HY-KERS even has a lower centre of gravity compared to the stock 599 GTB Fiorano.
